Ramblings of Random Rashawn

just a bit of everything

I apologize for the lack of posts. I moved, and my new place is still in boxes. My kitchen is a lot smaller now and it is going to take some time to get use to the whole baking thing in it. Today’s adjusting consists of writing this post, pinning and watching a marathon of Face Off on the Syfy channel.

Have any of you seen this show? I have to say I know this is going to be my new obsession. I have been sitting here wishing I am more artistic and creative to me a movie makeup artist. I always seem to discover great things halfway through it seems like. Thank goodness for marathons! Some of the stuff these guys are creating on this show are so out of this world it is just unbelievable. From sea creatures to movie villains, it takes some serious talent to do what these guys are doing.

So being a movie makeup artist will be at the top of my list for a while taking place of my dream to be a cryptic zoologist. Which I Syfy’s Destination Truth to thank for that one also. Do you see a trend starting here? Maybe I should start watching another channel? Umm, totally not going to happen! I have my Grandpa to thank for my love all this weird non-sense from this television channel. I really do watch other channels, just this one more than others.

Here is a short clip from Face Off. The pink sea monster is one of my favorites they have done! Along with the Tooth Fairy from the movie villain episode which I could not find a clip for.

Good Intentions January 9, 2012

Filed under: Rambles — ramblingsofrandomrashawn @ 12:25 pm

I will not make any resolutions this year, because I never follow through with them and then I am unhappy with myself because I didn’t keep them. So this year I have a list of intentions. Things that I will try to accomplish and if not I promise not to be unhappy with myself. I  shall share my list with you guys.

  • Be a better blogger
  • Post more often
  • Find a theme for this blog that I actually like
  • Dance more
  • Laugh more
  • Take my job less seriously
  • Cook more or at least equal to the amount I bake
  • Take more pictures
  • Sit in front of TV less
  • Hang out with friends more

I think that is a pretty good list to start the year. Hope everyone else has started the year off good and there aren’t too many broken resolutions yet. Here’s to 2012!

Christmas Goodies January 6, 2012

Filed under: Rambles — ramblingsofrandomrashawn @ 6:32 pm

I know that it is well past Christmas now but I still wanted to share what I baked for my family and friends this year. I did a total of 4 baskets, I know it doesn’t seem like much but they were packed FULL of goodies. I also took a bunch of goodies to work including their favorite the Butterfinger Rice Krispie Treats! They all go nuts over those.

Here is my list of everything I made.

Candy Cane Biscotti

Mint Creme Oreo Stuffed Dark Chocolate Cookies

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Vanilla Bean Marshmallows with Hot Cocoa Mix

White Chocolate Mocha Cookies

Orange Cranberry Holiday Granola

Butterfinger Rice Krispie Treats

Banana Nut Bread

Great Grandma’s Molasses Sugar Cookies

Peanut Butter Reindeer

Peppermint Bark

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and New Years! I must have been very good this past year because Santa brought me a brand new Dell laptop! Thanks again to my honey for the surprise. I really needed a new but it has been an adjustment getting use to it and rounding up all my pictures and recipes for the blog. But it was wonderful to see family that I only get to see once or twice a year and great to have sometime off of  work to relax. And the food of course! Christmas Eve is always spent at my Grandma D.’s where my dad deep-fried to turkeys, my grandma and mom fried about 40 pounds of chicken and she also fixed a ham! Christmas morning Chuckie and I spend it with my parents. Mom fixed pancakes, sausage and hash browns!  For Christmas dinner Chuckie and I go to his parents and his dad fixed rib roast. He made it in the rotisserie and it turned out so tender and juicy!

Snow December 17, 2011

In honor that my first Christmas party is today, that it was 55° outside when I went to work Thursday and that we still have NO snow, I thought I would post the pictures I took after our first snow fall back in November. They aren’t the greatest or even the prettiest pictures but I still enjoy them!

Oh and by the way, it is trying to snow!

Lack of Ho Ho Ho-ness December 9, 2011

Filed under: Rambles — ramblingsofrandomrashawn @ 10:07 pm

I just can not get into the holiday spirits this year. I do not know what it is but I have done hardly any baking, the Christmas tree did not even get put up until today! I finally took down the Halloween window clings today and put up the Christmas ones. I want to blame it on the lack of snow. We had about 6 inches a couple of days after Thanksgiving, then it rained and it was all gone. Today we got a little sprinkle of snow but nothing like we should have in Michigan right now. I am thankful I do not have to drive in it but it doesn’t feel like Christmas time with out it.

I have gotten most of my Christmas presents purchased, just have a few stragglers to get. I have really got to start my baking though! I have a dozen cookies done, that’s it! The first Christmas party is on the 17th to and I am working 10 straight days right now. I really should be in the kitchen and not on here rambling but I felt the need to express myself.

I feel a bit more inspired tonight, with the tree up, window clings changed. I am watching Elf on a Shelf right now. Already watched Frosty, Frosty Returns and Yes, Virgina. Ok, that just made me sound like I sit in front of the television all day. Which I do not do!

Made a couple of recipes this week, Simple Orange Cake from Technicolor Kitchen and Mint Creme Oreo Stuffed Fudge Cookies from Becky Bakes. Got good views for the orange cake, as for the cookies those babies are waiting for Christmas cookie baskets! I don’t really think you can go wrong with a cookie stuffed inside another cookie though! I believe that is about all I have to say right now. I apologize for my absence. I need a brief talking to from a good friend to get me back on track!

Think Pink October 21, 2011

Filed under: Rambles — ramblingsofrandomrashawn @ 8:16 pm

The first week and half to two weeks of October felt a little more like June with temperatures in the high 70s to low 80s so I have enjoyed October more the usual. But now that the temperatures have dropped to the mid 40s and the weather has turned rainy and very windy it actually feels like fall around here I was able to realize that it was October! October is Breast Cancer awareness Month if you did not already know. I am a proud supporter of breast cancer research, pink is my color for the month. My grandmother, Aunt Peggy and my Aunt Shelley have all been diagnosed with breast cancer. So being a supporter of finding a cure is something I do not take lightly. This year I took a moment to reflect on how much these three ladies mean to me.

My grandmother, well she’s my grandma! I cannot imagine my life without her. She is a strong woman, she raised 7 children 5 of which were boys. That takes a strong woman. She was the first in the family to have breast cancer. It was devastating for the family. When she started chemotherapy I promised her if she lost her hair I would shave my head and we’d be bald together. Now 8 years later she is still cancer free and she never lost her hair.

My Aunt Peggy was diagnosed a few years after my grandmother. She is my Godmother so I basically think of her as another mother, most people say we act a lot a like (I have her nose). She is my grandma’s oldest, my dad’s big sister. It came as a shock to everybody once again. She had the usual radiation and chemo. and is also cancer free still.

My Aunt Shelley is my dad’s sister-in-law and one of the funniest people I know. Love this woman to death! Her breast cancer was a bit more severe then grandma’s or Aunt Peg’s. She is missing a bit of her girls (as she’d call them). But she is strong none the less. She had a biopsy done a lump this year but it came back as scar tissue so we can say that she also is cancer free!

I love to be able to say that my family members are now cancer free but I mourn for the those that have lost loved ones to this disease. Remember to always have your yearly exams and do monthly self breast exams. If you are uncomfortable doing this remember that things we do for our health are not always fun. I touch my breast because I care about me!

It is easy to donate for the cure. During October (even year around) you can find many cute pink items that when purchased a certain percentage of the proceeds are donated to find a cure. Send your pink Yoplait yogurt tops in and they will donate 10¢ per lid to Susan G. Komen (you can even redeem your lids online now). You can also donate directly to Susan G. Komen here.

Fall Harvest Safety October 3, 2011

Filed under: Rambles — ramblingsofrandomrashawn @ 7:28 pm

With fall strongly in the air in my neck of the woods harvesting is underway. Soybeans are the pick of the week with field corn following right behind in the upcoming weeks, depending on how early you got your crops sewn. And for these two tiny grains I just want to take a moment and remind you all of safety for both farmers and other neighborhood residents. This topic is very near and dear to me coming for a line of farmers and also being the granddaughter of a man who was almost killed in a tractor accident. The fatality rate is five times higher in a tractor and motor vehicle accidents then in a regular vehicle accidents. Those orange triangles on the back of tractors, combines, hay wagons and other farm equipment are a reminder that you are behind a slow-moving vehicle, SO SLOW DOWN! Please remember to stay far enough back from the farm equipment so we can see you behind us.  Only pass when you are in a passing zone and are free of oncoming traffic. I know this seems like a no brainer but most farm equipment is over sized and we cannot pull safely off to the side of the road for you to pass us. But most of all I ask you to please be patient with us because after all we put most of the food on your dinner table!

Now I just want to share some country music love with you. This is one of my favorites and goes kind of along the harvesting lines.
